“Respect is the biggest factor in whether a relationship brings joy.”
Respect is probably one of the biggest factors in whether a relationship brings joy, feels fulfilling to both parties, and is likely to continue because each individual in the relationship feels honored and supported by the other.
So what does respect look like in terms of a close friendship, romantic relationship, or family dynamic? All of these count as relationships but they differ slightly in terms of intimacy and level of personal interaction. Let’s take a look at some examples of respect and how they play out in our relationships.
In a marriage, respect could look like the wife making dinner, and the husband coming home and expressing appreciation for the meal that she cooked for him. Respect for him for her could show up as him sitting down together with her, speaking to her, and listening to her as part of the enjoyment of sharing a meal with someone who you care about.
In that same situation, the wife’s respect for the husband could have her acknowledging that he might be home late and not able to join her to share dinner together. Out of respect for his situation and the need to work after hours, she might show through action that she cares, understands, and is willing to work within the modified situation. For example, out of respect, she might wrap and save his dinner in the refrigerator to heat up when he arrives home later and is able to eat it as time and schedule allow.
In family life, respect can look like a moment when the children come in from playing and remember to put their coats and hats into the closet instead of scattering them all over the front hallway. This gesture of care and consideration could be of respect for their mom and dad who work hard to give a nice home to their family and would like a tidy, clutter-free space to enjoy together.
Friends who show respect for each other might decide to be flexible about getting together. Mary and Janet have plans. Janet later states that she is unable to keep the plan because something important has come up. Mary can show respect for her friend by being understanding and flexible, asking the question, “When is a good time to reschedule so we can spend a few hours catching up?”
