Moving is hard for anyone, even more so for parents and other caregivers juggling the stresses of moving while seeing to the needs of those you care for. Here are six steps to the perfect move for caregivers:
6 Ingredients to a perfect move
- Have a positive attitude. Moving is stressful for everyone, no matter how much help you have. Embrace the suck.
- Make moving an adventure for yourself and everyone else moving with you. Give everyone an “important” task based on their age and abilities. Everyone will feel like part of the team that made the move a success.
- Have a plan for the kids. It maybe best for grandparents or others in your village to keep the kids for the day. Or perhaps, they can help for periods of time and then give them breaks where they can eat a snack and play on a mobile device or do another activity in a safe spot.
- Make arrangements for time off of work. The last thing you need are interruptions with work calls to answer question or (gasp) to come in.
- Hire a temporary moving assistant. In today’s world of virtual (e.g. Fiverr) and in-person (e.g. Task Rabbit) assistants are available for any need from finding moving boxes, researching movers, to assisting with the physical move as another pair of hands.
- Keep care receivers in the home in the loop to. Let all those in your care, young and old understand at a high level what the move will be like. If there is resistance to the move, be firm in explaining that everything is handled, on track, and the move is happening.
