my locks my
0:04
liberation hey y'all I've been wanting
0:06
to talk about this for a while not just
0:08
my hair but my journey my locks journey
0:11
from short natural curls to almost
0:15
shoulderlength locks this has been more
0:18
than just a hairstyle
0:20
it is a lessons in patience
0:24
self-love
0:26
determination stick tuitiveness positive
0:29
self-t talk really so a lot of people
0:33
talk about the big chop i did that over
0:35
25 years ago wore my hair short for a
0:39
long
0:40
time got married had kids my kids even
0:44
would say mommies have short hair and
0:46
daddies have long hair
0:49
it was a whole thing my husband has long
0:51
beautiful locks and when I was a
0:54
teenager I remember dreaming about the
0:57
man that I would marry would have
1:00
beautiful locks and at the time I didn't
1:03
have locks i had permed hair and you
1:06
know that was my frame of reference for
1:09
beauty and permed hair is still
1:12
beautiful because it's the choice of the
1:15
person wearing it so right
1:18
now my choice is to wear locks and I am
1:22
definitely in that phase where I'm early
1:25
in the stages of my locks are trying to
1:27
bud so there's
1:29
frizziness there
1:31
is just a lot going on and it's not
1:36
always a clean
1:39
cut step A to B to C all that kind of
1:42
stuff my hair is doing its thing so
1:45
that's the patience and the stick
1:47
tuitiveness because y'all couple weeks
1:49
ago I was thinking just cut it off cut
1:51
it cut it it's got to go i can't do it i
1:53
can't do it i was looking at old
1:55
pictures of my hair short and the curls
1:57
and I just remember that and I thought I
2:00
love those days but then I reminded
2:03
myself I'm like girl you know the second
2:06
you see a cloud in the sky and a little
2:07
bit of rain your hair is three times as
2:11
big you don't have a curl in your head
2:14
and it will be frizzy and fuzzy and you
2:17
will not be happy you will be looking
2:19
for the nearest hat to put on your head
2:24
so that's the stick tuitiveness that I
2:28
had to go back to i had to step away
2:30
from the scissors and I had to get my
2:32
head right
2:34
so this video is just me talking about
2:37
that lock journey so here are some
2:40
pictures of how that
2:43
started i started my locks so I did my
2:45
parts i did all my sections uh fun fact
2:49
I started my husband's locks and my
2:53
oldest son's
2:55
locks and they've had those locks for 10
3:00
plus years and when I started mine I
3:03
thought "Okay wow i don't even remember
3:04
how I kind of decided on that." But I
3:07
did my own I started my locks with coils
3:11
that's how I started out with them and
3:13
then I just let it go from there i am
3:17
really loving how I'm learning things
3:20
about how to take care of my hair how to
3:23
style my hair and I did what most people
3:26
do you go to the internet and you look
3:28
at what other people look like i was
3:31
feeling self-conscious about having gray
3:33
in my hair and I have plenty of pictures
3:36
of myself where I'm
3:37
like "Girlfriend is feeling great
3:40
wonderful awesome stupendous about the
3:44
hair." You know you get you got the flat
3:46
twist you take them out you get the
3:48
little crinkle you're feeling good the
3:50
gray is popping and it looks good but
3:54
then I do the locks and then it starts
3:56
to look fuzzy and kind of washed out in
4:00
do you know that when your hair turns
4:02
gray first it becomes lighter so like a
4:06
lighter brown cuz my hair was black so a
4:08
lighter brown before it going gray so I
4:12
have multiple colors in my
4:14
hair so some days that felt not so great
4:18
and I got very self-conscious about it
4:20
so you know it is what it is
4:23
but locks are an ancient way of wearing
4:29
the
4:30
hair so from Egypt to India Jamaica
4:34
Kenya locks were worn by warriors
4:37
prophets rebels they meant strength they
4:39
meant freedom they meant
4:41
spirit and now for me they
4:48
mean strength
4:51
they mean vitality they mean
4:57
choices it means this is me being
5:00
me now it's still humbling sometimes
5:04
when I go back to that selft talk where
5:07
it has to look a certain way and fall a
5:10
certain way because my hair is doing
5:11
whatever it wants to do and it's not
5:14
asking my permission to do any of
5:16
that so I understand that but I'm also
5:20
learning about
5:21
self-love and it's really making me say
5:24
to myself what message do you want to
5:27
send to yourself cuz the energy and what
5:29
you pour into yourself that's what comes
5:31
out that's what's shown to other
5:34
people
5:36
and self- loveve is what I want for
5:39
myself and what I want others to see
5:41
that I'm trying to share with them you
5:44
know I'd rather be around people that
5:45
are happy that that have self-love
5:48
rather than people that are hard on
5:49
themselves and and very
5:54
judgmental but anyway this is not
5:59
about self-t talk this is about my lock
6:06
journey my locks have taught me patience
6:09
because you cannot rush this process
6:11
it's just like healing just like growing
6:13
you got to sit in it let it unravel let
6:17
it reform itself it is doing what it is
6:20
doing and now I have to say it is
6:23
wonderful to see that my locks are
6:24
starting
6:27
to bud more and I'm getting some length
6:31
and they're getting a little
6:34
heavier so it's good to see that it
6:37
feels good to to see that happening and
6:41
I've seen people with faux locs or
6:43
install locks or even lock extensions
6:46
and I think oh wow that's you know I
6:49
kind of feel like you're missing some
6:52
parts of that you know but if you're
6:54
going to have them for you know a couple
6:56
weeks then I guess you know that's how
6:58
that's how your locks will look for you
6:59
but I do feel like you know you're
7:02
missing part of that journey but if if
7:05
you don't have the time or fortitude to
7:06
stay with it you know it is what it is
7:09
but for many of us locks are sacred
7:12
they're a way of reclaiming our roots
7:14
they are spiritual not just stylish so
7:17
for me yes I do want some style i do
7:20
want it to reflect me but I also realize
7:23
that it is a spiritual journey so when I
7:25
start to get too steeped in oh this
7:29
doesn't look right or it's not the vibe
7:30
I'm going for then I
7:33
think check on your spirit do a selfch
7:36
checkin where is your heart where is
7:38
your mind really right
7:40
now so my hair is leading me in a
7:45
direction it's redirecting me in
7:47
psychology we talk about being
7:49
redirected sometimes when you have
7:51
negative selft talk when you have
7:53
negative vibes or feelings um or when
7:56
you're when you're feeling like somebody
7:58
is making you feel less than you have to
8:01
redirect yourself so I feel like my hair
8:03
is this subtle but stern
8:08
redirector to get me to come out of that
8:10
negative mindset that negative self-t
8:12
talk because I'm fabulous i am awesome
8:16
and if I can't say that every day and
8:17
mean that stuff
8:19
baby then my hair needs to be telling me
8:22
girlfriend no you need to be redirected
8:26
so humble
8:28
myself
8:29
listen and redirect because the negative
8:33
selft talk will not stand it is no
8:35
longer welcome in this house amand all
8:38
right i didn't mean to preach but it is
8:40
what it
8:42
is so I look at social media and I think
8:47
it's not enough people with it's not for
8:50
me i would like to see more women with
8:53
gray kind of in that transitional phase
8:56
and so I'm sharing my lock journey to
9:00
show what that looks like i am 53 years
9:03
old 53 years fabulous and I've lived a
9:08
lot of great life and I have a lot more
9:10
left to
9:12
live and I would love for people to see
9:15
someone that looks like me that may not
9:19
look like what 53 may be assumed to look
9:22
like
9:24
but this is a transition and so this is
9:26
me figuring it out this is me sharing
9:28
that whole thing and saying it's
9:31
possible it's doable so if you want to
9:33
do that and you need a somebody to walk
9:37
with on that journey walk with me i'm
9:39
here let's go locks have helped me shed
9:43
more than
9:45
just a way of presenting myself but
9:49
they've helped me shed shame self-doubt
9:52
the idea that I had to change myself to
9:56
be loved having to look a certain way or
10:00
have a certain
10:02
mindset my locks have taught me that
10:05
growth isn't always visible but it is
10:08
something that is always happening so if
10:10
you are on your lock journey or thinking
10:12
about starting your lock journey
10:14
remember this it's not about the
10:18
destination but it's about the journey
10:21
and becoming the you that you are meant
10:25
to
10:26
be trust the process honor your roots
10:31
and wear your hair your crown your locks
10:34
with
10:35
pride i know I
10:37
am peace and ae if you enjoyed this
