Mama said knock you out,” a line from the legendary LL Cool J’s (1990) song of the same name appears to be a mantra-of-sorts repeated by Serena Williams in a commercial for Chase Bank. Who could forget the video for this song? LL Cool J stands in an empty boxing ring wearing a hooded sweatshirt that puts his face in shadow as he raps into an announcers microphone declaring the future of his opponent, “I’m gonna knock you out”. That would grab anyone’s attention, right?
Advertising works to grab the attention of the consumer to influence ‘buying into an idea’. A cream can remove acne. A beverage can brighten your life. Some ads like these offer solutions to problems while others promote a good feeling. Red Crow Marketing Inc. states that Digital Marketing experts estimate Americans can view between 4,000 to 10,000 ads daily. Now if I know I have some challenges coming on a given day; then, the words from the song can apply. Whatever idea you choose to ‘buy into’ make sure that it is what YOU need/want not what someone dictates to you. Create a mantra that holds up against thousands of ideas advertised daily through television, billboards, etc.
Develop a mantra, a sentence or multiple sentences that help you knock out negativity, knock out the doubt, and knock out fear. My mantra is splashed across my inspiration board. “Ignite something”, “Today I am living”, “Live your best life”, and “Leap”. Serena is a champion we all can look to for inspiration. In the Chase Bank commercial, Serena is subdued and focused. What do you think she will ‘knock out’? The challenges of motherhood? Another Singles title? Share your thoughts.
