Not everyone is surrounded by optimists. Some people struggle with those closest to them because they’re constantly hearing that they can’t, they shouldn’t try, it’s no use, the world is a bad place, people are out to hurt you, don’t let others take advantage, and a slew of negative messages that can shape your entire outlook on life and limit you in what you believe you can do.
Have you ever noticed how empowering it feels to be in the presence of a positive person? People who believe in our capabilities, people who approach difficult situations with calm competence, and people who find humor and encourage us to do our best and keep on trying are those that we gravitate toward.
Knowing this should point you to the fact that if you feel low on self-confidence it can have a lot to do with who you’re letting into your inner circle. We can’t always eliminate those villains who toss us a curve ball or bring us down in life. But we can definitely limit our contact with them and we can trade these negative experiences for positive ones with people who uplift us.
Where can you find optimists to help you feel empowered? Look beyond your circle of family and friends whom you have known for a long time. Forge new connections with people who share your interests. Many new and positive relationships are born from simply sharing what you love to do.
Seek out ways to express yourself in the company of others who want to do the same things as you.
Join clubs. Show up for social activities. Not ones that involve drinking and gabbing, but constructive things like a sewing class, a writing group at the library, or a kit-build project at your local home improvement store.
Volunteer at a hospital or nursing home, walk dogs at the local pet shelter. Do a Thanksgiving food drive. Mingle with people who share your wish to do good for the world and who want to cultivate creative talents and skills.
