Pitfalls of people who lack empathy
People who lack empathy are less likely to have advanced interpersonal abilities. They haven’t mastered the skill of reading social cues and being able to predict social outcomes by reading the room. As a result, there’s a higher chance of getting into a fight with others. There are many signs when someone lacks empathy.
Offends Others
People who lack empathy can inadvertently do things that offend others. They can’t infer how another person will react because they can’t understand what it’s like to be in their shoes.
People who lack empathy may also have a tendency to “put their foot in their mouth” due to an inability to gauge others’ emotions and be appropriately discreet, polite, or subtle as necessary.
Shallow Relationships
People who lack empathy tend to lack a depth of connection in their relationships. They may spend less time talking, feeling with, and thinking about others, and more time sticking to shared social activities that don’t require a more meaningful exchange.
Rather than engaging in meaningful exchanges where they spend a lot of time asking questions and imaging what another person may be thinking or feeling, they may stick to conversations that only skim the surface.
People who lack empathy may develop into authority figures who are feared rather than loved.
Bad Timing
People who lack empathy are not particularly adept at situational timing. They aren’t able to imagine what other people may be currently experiencing in order to know when is the opportune time to approach or initiate a situation.
